Why do we stay up till midnight on Dec 31st? Is it some superstition? Some pagan ritual? Do we think that a new year won't start unless we do this? It must be so. Why else would we gather, shoulder to shoulder, in Times square, without adequate facilities or, optionally, watch those who do on the tv. It makes no sense, yet here we are, awake, making sure that the new year arrives on time.
